The Wolf Group – An Emmy Noether Research Group

The Wolf Pack is a Emmy-Noether research group, funded by the DFG. We are focused on mineralisation processes in complex environments, such as biologically induced mineralisation. Biominerals, such as bone and seashells, are exceptionally well-controlled and multifunctional solid-state materials. Their formation are at odds with textbook models of crystallisation. It is our goal to elucidate their formation mechanisms on a molecular basis, and our results show that biomineralisation -- thus bioinorganic solid-state chemistry – is a complex interplay of colloidchemistry, supramolecular self-organisation and classical phase transformation and separation mechanisms. Our vision is to provide a thourough understanding of the process-structure-property relationships which will foster also bioinspired materials chemistry and the development of new material classes, such as hybrid ceramics.
